Multiple Sclerosis Compression Socks

Patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) suffer from loss of mobility. This increases their risk of developing thrombosis and lymphedema. This is why multiple sclerosis compression socks are often recommended to these patients.

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a rare condition, affecting less than 200,000 Americans every year.

It’s a potentially disabling disease that affects the brain and the spinal cord.

Patients suffering from multiple sclerosis often suffer from swelling on the lower extremities as a result of reduced or loss of mobility. This puts them at higher risk of deep vein thrombosis and lymphedema. Pharmacological prophylaxis cannot be taken by these patients over the long course of their condition. Hence, a common recommendation is the use of compression garments.

How Multiple Sclerosis Compression Socks Help

The use of compression socks is one of the best ways to prevent the side effects of immobility. The pressure they exert on the lower extremities pushes the fluid out of the affected limbs. With regular use, it can help in reducing the swelling and one’s risk of thrombosis.

It is important to note that while compression garments can help in reducing the swelling, one must stay vigilant at all times about skin care. Infection and skin breakdown are some of the most common complaints of those with edema.

Another thing that can help in reducing the swelling is elevating the affected limbs. In forums, a lot of people experience better result when they elevate their legs while lying in a bed.
