lymphedema compression garments

Compression therapy, which involves the use of compression products like lymphedema compression garments, is a popular treatment of choice for conditions like lymphedema. It is a common condition experienced by patients with cancer. In fact, its prevalence among cancer patients have rose from 0.95% in 2007 to 1.242% in 2013. Over 100,000 people in the US have cancer-related lymphedema.

Why Lymphedema Happens

To understand why and how lymphedema happens, it’s best to look into the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is comprised of the primary and secondary lymphatic vessels. Its purpose is to collect excess lymph fluid that contains proteins, lipids, and waste products from the body tissues. This fluid is then taken to the lymph nodes where it is filtered. The excess fluid in the lymphatic vessels is returned to the bloodstream.

Problem starts to happen when the lymphatic vessels are blocked. This keeps the lymphatic fluid from being carried away from the tissues. This eventually results to swelling or lymphedema.

Risk Factors and Clinical Manifestations of Lymphedema

There are several factors that contribute to the development of lymphedema. These include axillary node removal, sentinel node biopsy, obesity, surgery, local radiation, presence of tumor/s, and scarring of the left or right subclavian lymphatic ducts.

Lymphedema is characterized by swelling in one or more extremities. Patients with this condition may also suffer from an aching feeling, difficulty in movement, hard and tight skin, wart-like growths on the skin, and leakage of fluid through the skin.

Compression Therapy for Lymphedema

Compression therapy refers to wearing of garments specifically designed to support veins with the aim of improving the blood circulation. Compression garments like lymphedema compression garments are often worn upon waking up in the morning and are removed upon retiring at night.

This form of therapy works for cases like lymphedema as the compression keeps the blood from pooling into the veins and hence, leads to improvement in blood flow and reduction of swelling and discomfort.
